MEDIA RELEASE – July 14th, 2015

The Leaguers, Inc. Big Latch On

On the 1 – 7th of August every year, to raise awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding and the need for global support, the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action organises World Breastfeeding Week. World Breastfeeding Week, August 1-7, is celebrated in 120 countries and marks the signing of the WHO/UNICEF document Innocenti Declaration, which lists the benefits of breastfeeding, plus global and governmental goals.

To mark this occasion on Friday 31st July and Saturday 1st August 2015 at 10:30am thousands of breastfeeding women and their babies/children across the world will gather in their own communities to take part in the Global Big Latch On, a synchronized breastfeeding event in multiple locations. Our local Big Latch On will take place at The Leaguers, Inc. 405- 425 University Ave. Newark, NJ 07102.

The first Big Latch On took place in Aotearoa New Zealand in 2005, it was introduced to Portland, Oregon in 2010 by Small Beginnings Group LLC and has now taken off globally.

This year our goal is to break the current 2013 record of 14,536 children breastfeeding across 845 locations, and the 2014 records for numbers of countries taking part (31), numbers of breastfeeding women attending  (14,173) and total attendance (23,906).

The Leaguers, Inc. believes breastfeeding contributes to the normal growth and development of babies/children, and babies/children who are not breastfed are at increased risk of infant morbidity and mortality, adult obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and premenopausal breast cancer and ovarian cancer (both mom and baby.) The World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months of a baby's life to optimize these benefits, continuing to breastfeed for 2 years and as long thereafter as is mutually desired by a woman and her child.

Breast Fest 2015 was a Successful Event!

The Leaguers Inc. Head Start/ Early Head Start, with over 60 years of community service was proud to host its first annual Global Big Latch On, “Breast Fest 2015”. Thanks in part to our Pregnant Services team and the generosity of community partners like Statewide Parenting Advocacy Network of NJ(SPAN NJ), The Partnership of Maternal and Child Health of Northern NJ, Essex Pregnancy and Parenting Connection (EPPC), Ironbound Neighborhood Council, Women Infant Children (W.I.C), March of Dimes and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP- ED Rutgers). As well as the 16 independent volunteers that took the time to help support the participants and help to spread the word that breastfeeding is normal.

Pregnant Services was pleased to welcome the 17 latching mothers and babies that attended, as well as the 10 pregnant mothers and guests that came out in support of breastfeeding. The mothers of the surrounding Essex and Union county areas really showed how meaningful this stage of their child’s development is to their families.

Special thanks to our guest speakers Kasey Dudley, CLC of SPAN NJ on her wonderful presentation on “The Benefits of Breastfeeding” and Patricia Hindin, CNM CLC for her informative “Breastfeeding and the Law” presentation.  Also special thanks goes out to The Partnership, EPPC, March of Dimes and Babies “R’ Us for their generous donation and gift cards.

We look forward to continuing our relationship with The Global Big Latch On with many more “Breast Fests” to come!
